Aeration Systems
•
CAN REDUCE AQUATIC WEEDS and ALGAE
• CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH CLEANER WATER
• CAN IMPROVE YOUR FISHING
You
will be pleasantly surprised at the improvement whether
your pond is used primarily for recreation, or for fish
culture Our bottom diffusion aeration system can give your
pond or lake a new lease of life. It can give you clearer
and cleaner water. It provides bottom to top circulation,
which increases dissolved oxygen. This supports the natural
processes that can clean up your water for you. Fish are
more active with higher dissolved oxygen levels. The Kristal
Klear aeration system accelerates the digestion of the black
smelly, organic bottom deposits that support excessive weed
and algae growth. Our aeration system can prevent the costly
removal of these deposits with heavy equipment. Tests have
shown that bottom deposits can be reduced by up to 6 inches
per year near the diffusers with continuous operation.
Aeration
is the single most efficient method of reversing pond and
lake aging. Water in older ponds and lakes does not have
enough oxygen at the bottom to support fish and other desirable
aquatic life. This is due to the gradual build-up of partially
decayed organic sediment (faecal waste, dead plants and
animals, leaves, yard debris, fertiliser run off, etc.)
This decaying sediment can produce toxic substances such
as hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, and methane. There is also
the more obvious presence of excessive algae and weed growth
that feeds upon this rich fertilizer. Chemical weed treatments
only temporarily solve the problem of visible weeds, while
their decay aggravates the long-term problem by adding even
more organic waste. Aeration supports organisms that digest
this organic waste into substances that benefit the pond
ecosystem.
The
Kristal Klear diffusion aeration system combines pressurised
water with oxygen delivered at the lake bottom creating
large volumes of air bubbles which rise bringing the bottom
water to the surface.
The
diffusers are especially designed to produce bubbles that
circulate water to the surface as it picks up oxygen. The
diffuser is placed on the bottom of the pond (preferably
in the deepest water). There are many variations to the
basic system depending upon the need of the particular body
of water.
One diffuser is needed for up to a quarter of an acre of water
(1,000 square metres) approx.
There is minimal dead bottom water with this kind of aeration. It gets
more oxygen into the water for less money. Water flows from the bottom
to the top and then circulates towards the shore in a continuous circuit
when the aeration system is running. This effectively breaks up stratification,
and makes the entire pond more supportive of fish and the organisms they
feed on. Fishing improves because sport fish are more active, even in the
warmest weather, and they have a larger food supply. Areas of a pond or
lake that have been restricted to aquatic life due to low oxygen will be
rejuvenated. Weeds and algae will diminish as the organic material that
they feed on is reduced.
The Kristal Klear AERATOR has been designed by a Golf Course greenkeeper
and successfully piloted in Australia and in the UK.

Pond/Lake
Health
Pond
and lakes are a valuable natural resource. They add to the
beauty of the landscape, provide recreation, are a habitat
for fish and wildlife and an additional water source if
needed. However, the good health of a pond is held in a
delicate balance. A pond's condition deteriorates when the
bottom environment cannot support animal life. The bottom
is the area that runs out of oxygen first, it is where the
most oxygen is used and it is the farthest from the surface
where it is replenished. Without oxygen a lake or ponds
self-purification capability is not only reduced, it is
reversed. The small animals, snails, worms, bacteria, etc.,
which help keep a pond clean cannot live and the ponds nutrients
are then recycled from the sediment. This forms a layer
of muck at the bottom which serves as a fertilizer for weed
and excessive algae growth. It could also cause large fish
kills.
Benefits
of Pond and Lake Bed Aeration
Aeration
means adding air to the water. To restore a lake to health,
it is essential to get oxygen down to the lake bottom. Lake
Bed Aeration not only adds oxygen to the surface water but
to the water at the bottom of the lake as well. Once the
lake is full of oxygen near the bottom, beneficial aquatic
insect larvae, snails, fresh water shrimp, and other fish
food can begin to live on the bottom and littoral zone (light
zone).
Lake eutrophication begins when the BOD (Biological Oxygen
Demand) of a lake cannot be met. When too much pollution
enters a lake, plant and algae growth dies and sinks to
the bottom, resulting in an overload of organic sludge.
Lower forms of life on the lake bed die and this debris
rots. Anaerobic bacteria, which needs no oxygen, give off
deadly poisonous gases, such as hydrogen sulphide, ammonia,
and methane. These gases, as they rise through the water,
unite with and bind up and dissolved oxygen remaining in
the water. Fish will then die from lack of oxygen. By drawing
compressed air out onto the lake bed diffuser, the rising
air bubbles bring the bottom water to the surface. Large
volumes of water release pollutant gases to the air and
pick up more oxygen while on the surface. If oxygen is present
at the lake bed, dead organisms will not accumulate but
will quickly be consumed by aerobic bacteria, thus providing
for a healthier lake environment.
